Which and how many characters can be used for a domain name

The rules for second level domain names accepted are:
Names must be 63 characters or less.
Names may start with a letter or digit, end with a letter or digit, and have as interior characters only letters, digits, and hyphens.
Names are ASCII case insensitive
Examples:
hello-world.firm and HELLO-WORLD.firm are the same name
AWordOf63Characters.info is legal
1.web is legal
4x.firm is legal
77.shop is legal
word-.info is illegal
-word.info is illegal
7-7.rec is legal
