Because of the intense growth of the internet, it has become necessary to increase the number of top level domain names. The main alteration is that in addition to the already existing top level domains (.com, .net, .org etc.), there are now seven new ones:
.arts for institutions in the cultural and artistic area
.firm or .biz for company names
.info or .news for news agencies and information services
.nom for private persons, e.g. personal nomenclature, like a nom de plume
.rec for spare time activities, recreation and entertainment
.shop for wholesale and retail trade
.web for activities related to the World Wide Web
